What is Frozen Shoulder?

September 30th, 2008 by Coach | Filed under frozen shoulder.

_MG_4907 Frozen shoulder is a condition that inhibits motion in the shoulder joints. Also known as adhesive capsulitis, it results in great shoulder pain and even loss of movement caused by the contraction of an otherwise normal joint.

Once the capsule surrounding the shoulder joint shrinks, it forms stiff and scarred tissues known as adhesions. The shrinking joints and formed adhesions make the condition painful. The pain can remain for weeks or months and the condition can cause loss of movement for months or even many years unless dealt with properly.

Women between 40 and 60 years old are twice as likely to experience frozen shoulders as men. Those with conditions such as diabetes, heart problems, Parkinson’s disease, thyroid issues, and other endocrine abnormalities are also more prone to this condition. People who have shoulder injuries or have undergone shoulder surgeries and have not been exercising or physically active in any way are more at risk for developing frozen shoulders.

Thanks for linking to my own post about my personal experience with frozen shoulder.

Two things I’d like to pass on to anyone with this problem. 1) do stretches/exercises often, as in 3-5 times a day, and 2) it’s not like regular stiff muscles in that it won’t improve in a few days, so don’t get disappointed if you only find minimal improvement.
